Our friends at the Canadian Journalism Foundation are hosting a panel entitled "Keeping an eye on journalism" on Tuesday May 25 in Toronto, and have kindly waived their entrance fee for friends of Samara.
From their website:
"Wikis, bloggers, media critics...or ombuds? Which is better? Is the watchdog function more effective inside or outside a media organization? The New York Times, the Toronto Star and the CBC have ombuds or public editors. The public says it trusts a media organization with that position. So why don’t more newspapers and broadcasters follow? A CJF Forum asks the question -- is an ombuds still needed these days?"
The panellists include CBC ombud Vince Carlin, Toronto Star public editor Kathy English, and National Post assistant managing editor John Racovali. The moderator is Ryerson journalism professor and former NPR ombud Jeffrey Dvorkin.
The event begins at 6:30, followed by a reception, at Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue, Toronto. If you want to register online, please go here and use the discount code SAMARA. Alternatively, you can email them at programs@cjf-fjc.ca and mention Samara in the subject line.
P.S. You can read a review of the event here.
